This is north. North points up❷ on a map.

This is east. East points right.

This is west. West points left.

This is south. South points down.

Li Ming：Look at the map，Wang Mei. We can see all the countries ❸ around the world. 

Wang Mei：Yes. I can see China. It’s red on the map. But  where is New Zealand？My grandparents will go there during the Spring Festival.

Li Ming：Well，can you see Australia？

It’s southeast  of ❹  China. And New Zealand is southeast of Australia.

Wang Mei：Yes，I see it. And where is Canada？

Li Ming：It  is north of the U.S. 

Wang Mei：Oh，yes！It is green on the map！Danny is green，too.

north，south，east and west都是方位词。

四个方位词的词性及用法。

这四个方向词＋­ern构成形容词，表示“……方的”，即：

point up向上指

eg：Please point up.请向上指。

辨析point at与point to

point at

指向较近的事物。指向某人时常有责备、抱怨之意。

You can’t point at your mother like that.你不能像那样指着你妈妈。

point to 

指向较远的事物。指向某人时不含贬义。

He is pointing to a flying bird happily.他正高兴地指着一只飞翔的小鸟。

Nick ________ the building at the end of the street and says，“I work there.”

A．points up　　　 B．point up

C．point to            D．points to

【点拨】 point up意为“向上指”，point to 意为“指向某物/人”。根据句意“尼克指向街尽头的大楼……”可知此处用point to。又因主语Nick是第三人称单数，故谓语动词用第三人称单数。故选D。

country/'kʌntrI/可数名词，翻译为“国家”。

eg：China is a big country.中国是一个大国。

country还可以翻译为“乡村”，此时country　常与the连用。

eg：My aunt raises pigs in the country.

我的姑姑在乡下养猪。
